Exciting new research from California, as highlighted by JDRF recently, offers new hope of a cure for those living with Type 1 diabetes. Involving the transplantation of hypoimmune islets into the monkey, researchers were gradually then able to reduce the amount of insulin given to the type 1 macaque monkey eventually down to nothing.
A week after the transplantation the monkey’s c-peptide levels returned to normal, showing full insulin independence. The islets were removed from the monkey after 6 months, leading to the monkey needing insulin injections again – proving that the islet transplantation were the cause of the previous insulin independence.
Let’s keep an eye on the development of such research which could lead to a potential cure for type 1 diabetes.
