Being still fairly new to having a glucose monitoring sensor, I was amazed to discover the variety of patches which could be purchased to adorn or cover it! I’ve tried a few now, and am currently settling for those which are easy for me to actually secure to my arm without the need to be a contortionist!
I would imagine that there are many reasons why diabetics choose to cover their sensor from embarrassment of their illness, protection during exercise or work, through to simply expressing themselves. Personally for me it’s a practical need to try to ensure that the sensor remains on my arm for the full 2 weeks, but I must admit that I’m all for a bit of arm decoration too.
It got me thinking around how these patches have come into being, as most of them are available via third party providers such as Diabetic Supply rather than the manufacturer of the sensor. Most of the brands seem to have been developed by the diabetic community themselves or their careers, so there is something out there to cater for everyone.
If you haven’t already tried using a patch, I really would give them a go – most come in sample packs, so you don’t have to commit to buying multiple patches without knowing whether they are going to suit both your lifestyle and personality. They really can make a difference to how you feel about being a diabetic as well as extending the live of your sensor – sometimes it’s the small things that can make a big difference… Personally I’m looking forward to Halloween when I can get all batty and spidery…
