Why oh why is it that every time a news item talks about anything to do with diabetes, it is always accompanied by images of people in the street eating something from a famous UK bakery outlet? Not only is this extremely lazy journalism, it is insulting to both these faceless people enjoying their sausage roll and the entire diabetic community. We are NOT all the same! Very often we do not know which particular “type” of diabetic we actually are, and this can change over time anyway!
Such stereotypes are not only unrepresentative of our diverse community, they are hurtful and can create stigma and prejudice. Self-belief and confidence can already be dented within those coping with diabetes, so we really don’t need others telling us that it is all our own fault that we have developed this condition.
Discover how Diabetes UK are helping to tackle such stigma by encouraging members to share their own experiences and through inviting further research into this important and impactful area.
