Most diabetics are more than aware of the positive impact that technology such as CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring) and HCL (Hybrid Closed-Loop) systems can have to help improve the management of our chronic illness. We also know that they are nothing without proper education and support from medical experts.
Research from an expert team of diabetes practitioners within the UK has discovered varied confidence amongst several groups of NHS staff in supporting diabetic patients in the use of technology, especially HCL systems.
Findings highlight themes such as education, confidence, and burnout, all having an impact upon key health care professionals, especially those within the midwifery field. Having the time to explore such equipment with the patient was, as always, mentioned as a factor.
It is wonderful that we have access to such technology within the UK, but there is still much more to be done in terms of education for both diabetics and their support teams.
