It could all be in the genes

New research from the University of Exeter, co-funded by JDRF, has led to worldwide screening for babies diagnosed with type 1 before they are 9 months old, in the hope of developing new treatments. The research has studied two siblings born with a genetic mutation, which researchers think could be the cause on their early-onset autoimmune diabetes.

The mutation is in the gene for a protein called programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), which impacts upon cancer patients too. This amazing research investigating the impact of PD-L1 could not only help type 1 diabetics, it could also improve the lives of cancer patients – double-win!
