Working girl

As my various health appointments can sometimes seem to come all at once, I find that I need the support and understanding of my employer more than ever.  So, what are my rights when it comes to working and having Type 1 diabetes?

JDRF offers a really useful overview of things to consider, including working patterns and legislation.  Not everyone feels comfortable or wants to share medical conditions with their employer, BUT diabetes is deemed an unseen disability by the Equality Act 2010 which can offer protection against potential discrimination.  The act offers advice to both the employee and employer around making reasonable adjustments, ranging from managing work breaks and hospital appointments through to providing private spaces to inject.

So even if you don’t feel as though you need to reach out to your employer at this very moment, it’s good to know what rights you have to help you to negotiate your way through the world of work so that you continue to feel useful and valued.
