C-peptide testing

As someone who was originally diagnosed and treated as a Type 2 diabetic several years ago, I discovered when I later progressed on to needing insulin that there was something called a C-peptide test. It got me wondering whether having this test was the norm when first presenting with symptoms at the GP?

Is this something which is offered automatically to people who present with high blood sugar levels and weight loss? I would welcome anyone else’s experience of the use of this test, as for me I felt that it would have been hugely beneficial and would have not left me feeling like a newly diagnosed (and confused) diabetic since having the test confirm my Type 1 status earlier this year…

You will find some really useful information around getting tested for diabetes, which includes an overview of the C-peptide test on the Diabetes UK site. NICE also has some guidelines, for those who want a more detailed read around the topic of both diagnosis and management of diabetes.
